Enlistment records (dated 16th March 1916) show him as a farm hand in Blenheim, New Zealand and confirm his date and place of birth (18th May 1890 in Old Kilpatrick). Mother listed as his next of kin. Private in the 2nd Bn Canterbury Regiment in the New Zealand Expeditionary Force, service number 15012. According to the CWGC record he won a Military Medal.
